Real Estate Counsel

Healthcare Trust of America, Inc. (NYSE: HTA) is the largest dedicated owner and operator of medical office buildings in the United States.  We are looking for an attorney with sophisticated commercial real estate transaction experience to join our Legal Department. In this role, the Real Estate Counsel will assist in managing, coordinating, and advising on leasing, acquisition, disposition, construction, and development matters on behalf of the Company.  The qualified candidate will be detail oriented and adaptable to work in a fast-paced environment and operate with the highest degree of integrity.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Draft, negotiate and interpret commercial medical office leases, renewals, amendments, estoppels, notices of default, and other correspondence to tenants
  • Lead real property acquisition and disposition transactions
  • Assist with review and negotiation of construction and development related documents
  • Oversee litigation matters relating to tenant defaults, lease disputes and property management
  • Provide direction to paralegal teams in multiple states
  • Develop processes and procedures for legal requests and documentation flow, approvals and reporting consistent with internal processes
  • Other assignments as requested

Minimum Requirements:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school; strong academic record
  • 5 -10 years of relevant legal experience, including substantial experience in leasing and commercial real estate transactions
  • Prior experience representing REITs (a plus)
  • Effective negotiation skills
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of analytical, conceptual and strategic thinking
  • Self-motivated, highly organized and ability to manage multiple projects with high attention to detail
  • Effective interpersonal and cross-organizational communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to travel
